I was born and raised in Orange County, California. After graduating from high school in Costa Mesa, I studied Environmental Science at the University of Redlands where I focused on desert tortoise research, land management policies, community development and environmental law. During my junior year I spent a semester in Puerto San Carlos, BCS Mexico, where I worked with locals to help develop better management practices to protect endangered sea turtles.
After graduating from college I spent a year volunteering with AmeriCorps NCCC, a team-based volunteer program. My team helped carry out environmental and disaster relief projects in New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina. Following this year, I chose to spend an additional year with AmeriCorps teaching marine environmental science at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center in Port Townsend, WA. During that year I helped write curriculum, cared for hundreds of intertidal animals in our tanks, and taught people of all ages about marine animals, focusing most specifically on the Southern Resident Killer Whale population of the Puget Sound!
I earned my teaching credential from Dominican University of California in San Rafael in 2011 and landed my first teaching job here at Harmony Union School District! I've been teaching and living in west county for the past eight years, with six of those years teaching grade five before transitioning to Kindergarten. I'm interested in nurturing the "whole child" by developing deep relationships with my students and connecting them with our natural environment. My desire to move down to Kindergarten from grade five came after spending more time researching brain development in young children. I try my best to run a structured and academic Kindergarten classroom while embedding many opportunities for creative outdoor play, exploration, MAKER time, mindfulness, stewardship, and developing a stronger of compassion through living and working in a community together.
My hobbies and interests include cuddling with my puppy, practicing yoga, hiking, traveling, photography, reading, gardening, canoeing and cooking. My husband grew up in Occidental and attended Harmony and Salmon Creek School!
